This week Trent came over to my house to briefly work on some company tasks. Not even 10 minutes had passed when another friend unexpectedly showed up. This other friend opened up about an unsuccessful suicide attempt that occured just 48 hours earlier. Trent stopped his work on Convoi, and immediately switched tracks to be there in a way that this individual needed. During the moment they were in deep conversation, I get an email from Silicon Slopes informing me that Trent had done a podcast about life as a new VC in Utah. I looked over at him helping my friend, and felt gratitude to know both these people.
I know Trent has lots of demand for his time. To see Trent order lunch for this other friend and block out several hours to talk through his own struggles with depression was probably one of the more impressive moments of our 10 year relationship. These moments of helping and being present aren’t ones that people often share. For these people it’s just natural for them to just act without it being on the job description or even being a close relationship. I just feel that I should share so that I can thank Trent and everyone else that can be there in moments that are very real.
Below is the image in the email that showed up on my computer. He will always be a way better human than he is a venture capitalist :)
