When to Quit
I met a brilliant 27 year old software developer yesterday. He is contemplating quitting his nice job at Microsoft to go on his own and do a startup with his partner/spouse.
These are always tricky conversations because I am mostly going to encourage people to chase entrepreneurship over corporations with perceived safety. But it really isn’t a math problem as much as it is a heart problem. The math probably looks best to stay in steady jobs with all the benefits. But the heart makes it difficult to do something when you want to be building your own thing and are capable of building it.
His startup already is generating 6 figures in revenue. It’s a very good idea and I think he should stay as long as possible until his performance at day job suffers.
This same person had 2 full time jobs paying very well during covid. He was able to work remote for both teams and double his income. Now he is married with a baby and he is not feeling he can split the time at corporate and startup.
I know many reading would love to be in the situation to be able to quit a day job and have skills to do startup. Many of you do, especially the developers out there. If you don’t think you can quit or you have no job at all, maybe it’s time to get crazy. My main advice is not to stay somewhere and miserable. If your heart needs to go on an adventure, fucking take action and GO!

Headed to OutpostX this week for an adventure. Spent hours on phone talking to the founder of this hotel experience that it was worth doing. When people do things that no one else has done, it can appear as art and often feel like you made bad business decisions. Well that’s art.
