Nate, The Inventor
His name is Nate Walkingshaw. He invented something new at Torus. They created a flywheel that stores energy. It just won TIME Invention of 2024!
Nate has a cofounder and a team, but he is the inventor. I first met him after he invented a gurney that worked with stairs for paramedics.
When he told Trent and I about Torus, we were quick to invest in him with our brand new Convoi VC. The next Torus and Nate are what we spend all our day looking for:) Notice how bald he is? That’s cuz he is smart and sexy.
Utah has lots of inventors and many have been receivers of this TIME award. Here is a list Nate shared on LinkedIn today:
Artificial Heart (1982): The University of Utah’s groundbreaking Jarvik-7, developed by Dr. Robert Jarvik, marked the world’s first artificial heart transplant and paved the way for life-saving cardiac technologies.
Television (1920s): Philo T. Farnsworth, who grew up partly in Utah, developed the first fully electronic television, revolutionizing communication and entertainment.
Electric Traffic Light (1912): Salt Lake City’s own Lester F. Wire invented the first electric traffic signal, a milestone in transportation safety that set a worldwide standard.
Video Game Industry (1970s): Utah native Nolan Bushnell co-founded Atari and created Pong, sparking the modern gaming industry and bringing interactive entertainment to households worldwide.
Utah Bionic Leg (2023): Last year, Dr. Tommaso Lenzi’s team at the University of Utah earned a spot on TIME's list with the innovative Utah Bionic Leg, recognized for its life-changing impact on mobility.
You will notice all these inventions are physical. I believe inventions are happening with code and software as well. I am partnered with an inventor and I feel I am inventive myself. I’m glad to live in a State of Inventors and learn from them and be inspirer by them
