This was a phrase my Uncle Ken used to say when he wanted you toughen up. We are celebrating him today. He lived 75 years, most of them with back pain caused by bucking broncos he rode in his 20s. He loved BYU football, and like many a Mormon, his testimony of the Cougars was stronger than any. I am going to the BYU vs Utah rivalry game next week. I have no enemies, but I enjoy watching the BYU fans faith tested knowing some anchor their belief in The Almighty to the team’s success.
I’m typing this at the funeral right now. It’s been such a great hour to reflect on this man. However, 25% of the words shared at most Mormon funerals, including this one, are sales presentations for eternal life with your family. If you can stomach the 10% of earnings to LDS Inc., then this feature of membership gives you a lot of hope. If you don’t pay? Well, you are making a risky bet with your salvation and your ability to be with your family in the afterlife.
I would ask that if any of you go dying on me, please celebrate in a place that isn’t selling something. I will even sponsor your life celebration at my barn if you don’t have a place. Reach out to me now if you feel like your days are numbered.
Uncle Ken, you were a funny dude. I loved your stories you told as we struggled to sleep at grandma’s house on Christmas Eve. Your beautiful girls have been the best cousins a lost boy like me could grow up with. You did well.
